SEWP BOWL? Really? And who said the government doesn’t have a sense of humor.

Isaac Newton was a genius. That’s undisputed. He was also wrong.
It’s important to note that while Newton was on the right track with gravity, his logic was fundamentally flawed and as a result his theory and understanding were 100% wrong.
The flaw in newtonian physics lies in assuming that objects are attracted to each other, while in truth the fact of the matter is that matter bends space itself, the appearance of gravity is nothing but smaller objects moving within space that is bent by larger ones.
Imagine a trampoline with a bowling ball in the center of it. The trampoline represents space, the bowling ball represents, for the sake of argument, the sun.
Roll a tennis ball around the bowling ball and you get a 2D approximation of why/how orbital mechanics works. The bowling ball isn’t pulling the tennis ball into a semi-round orbit, but the surface the tennis ball is travelling on is curved, so the ball moves with the curve.
Matter tells space how to bend, space tells matter how to move.
Next week I’ll explain time.

Yes, I’m that kind of geek. ![]()
What can I say, it’s been a while.
Just for those of you who would like a break from storage. I hacked into my Prius and added a few options:
1. Removed the safeties from the bluetooth and radio so I can dial the goddamned phone using the keypad and no longer have to dial using the phone when the number isn’t in my speed-dial list.
2. Added a “DVD-Video” mode to it with an auxiliary set of inputs so I can plug my video iPod into it and play it back on the console display.
3. Added a “Stealth” mode to it so I can disable the internal combustion engine and run it on pure electric. (Works for about 5 miles, the stock batteries aren’t worth shit)
4. Added a factory XM satellite kit for about 1/5 what Toyota wanted for it.
Fun stuff. Amazing the things you can find on the web.
Just a little non-storage side-step. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.
So tell me something, how much sense does it make to pay anywhere from between $150 and $250 an hour for a consultant to come in and then tie their hands to the ankles by telling them they can’t actually do any of the work.
That’s the situation I find myself in. The customer, a fairly large company that provides consulting servers, managed hosting, etc, brings me in to help them figure out some SRDF migration issues.
They give me a cube, a phone, and a connection out to the internet so I can get email.Â
What I don’t get however is access to ControlCenter, any of the hosts, or any of the Storage arrays.
Today I spent 8 hours on the customer site and because I spent most of my time waiting for everyone else to gather information for me, got about 45 minutes of real work done in that time.
As Forrest Gump says, “stupid is as stupid does.”
Â
Now here is someone with *WAY* too much time on their hands. They take a mini USB2.0 hub, and 4 thumbdrives and create a 3GB Raid5 array (or if you’re really creative and you’re using a real operating system, a 2GB Raid 1/0 array) Â
I actually agree with him that the uses of such an array, while limited, are there. There are a number of imbedded systems which boot from flash, a perfect example is my Quantum/ADIC Scalar i500 library, which has a Library Control Module which boots from a small Compact Flash card mounted to the board. I’ve now replaced this card three times because of random weirdness associated with it.
Maybe having a redundant boot prom would help with this?
