Truthfully the basics of fibrechannel will prepare you well for just about everything, except maybe iSCSI, if only for the lack of anything resembling zoning. (One of the things I don't like about iSCSI, you depend greatly on the initator/target to filter out all of the non-essential traffic.

With FC/Zoning - you just know that unless you didn't implement zoning (bad idea) that your initiator is only going to see your target.

I guess you could use VSAN's to segregate out traffic if you wanted to.

"If not, believe it or not there is actually a “Storage Area Networks For Dummies” book out as well. "

And honestly its a pretty darn good primer for people. No coverage of anything newer that FC 2gbps though (no iSCSI, etc). But for FC basics, anyone should be able to grasp it after reading it - if not... maybe "Storage Area Networks for Absolute F*cking Morons" is around the corner. ;)

Syngress Publishing had a book out called "Building Storage Networks" that was the SAN bible for the longest time. There is a second-edition out recently that proves to be just as helpful and informative as as the first. And is also helpful if you find yourself in a hotel-room without your usual dose of Ambien.

@Andrew Storrs

Any particular, freely available resources you'd recommend covering as part of "Storage 101" ?

I love those kinds of comments... "Storage 101" should be a required course for everyone in IT, at least any one who deals with infrastructure.
