My "when all else fails" is applebee's carside to go. It's pretty hard to mess up a salad, and applebee's has spread across most of the country. Their asian chicken salad is decent.

I have TeleNav on my Sprint Blackberry, it does a pretty good job of finding restaurants when I get in a pinch. Divides food into type and locale, but no quality.

I try to avoid fast-food, but sometimes it's just not possible. Chick-Fil-A is a good quick option that is relatively healthy as far as they go.

If I'm in the mood to treat myself I usually hit an Outback or something along those lines, the steak isn't perfect but it's predictable, and nothing sucks more than a bad steak. Outback's Ribeye's are pretty good quality and their Cesear salad is good and spicy. They don't have real beer (I'm a Guinness drinker) but I had a Foster's last night there that wasn't bad at all.

I usually go to an Irish pub for three reasons. One, they are local (I hate chains), two, locals are more friendly and talkative. Three, if the food and the locals suck, there's the Bushmill's. And then, from the locals, I can get real restaurant reviews. The hotel staff always points you to THE WORST food ever.

I wanted to buy the Zagat's plugin for my Garmin Nuvi, but I've had pretty good luck with my method above. Oh yeah, and stay away from any restaurant attached to, in the parking lot, or within visual distance of a mall.

Hertz NeverLost is my usual guide for finding places to eat, until I get a recommendation from someone in the area. It's currently batting about a 33% success rate though so I may need to rethink my plan of attack.
