Ethics of hiring in the storage industry…
by Jesse on Jul.31, 2007, under Ethics, Job Market
So a friend passed on this story and I thought it worthy of commenting on.
He’s been going through the interview process with a major storage manufacturer to work in their Backup & Recovery group. On getting through the ‘tentative’ offer a comment was made:
‘I really want to bring you on but I have to figure out who I’m going to let go to make the head-count numbers work’
Ok, who wants that kind of blood on their hands? And who wants to work for a company that will so blithely play games with peoples lives?
Sorry, I’ll pass.Â

Could be that they are creating a background so that when a formal offer (including cash) is made they use this as an ethical reason to try and keep the offer reasonable?

Could be, but I wouldn’t hold my breath… I think it’s more along the lines of the same line of thinking my 11-year-old uses.
“….But this one is so much cooler than my old one!”
LOL

Sorry you were offended. Sad to say, it’s a cold, hard world out there.
I’ve often been in the position of having to figure out how to recruit the best talent, and figuring out who goes elsewhere.
But I’ve never been so callous (I think) as to actually share that with a candidate.

One thing you NEVER want to do as a hiring manager is let the incoming person know that he too might someday be expendable.
Of course, this particular storage vendor has demonstrated on many many occasions that people are disposable. I’ve seen them go through more layoffs and hiring binges than i can count.
