Cisco – to switch or not to switch?
by Jesse on Jan.04, 2007, under Cisco, General
Well, I may stand corrected yet again. After countless attempts to go back and forth with EMC about “Dial-Home” on the Cisco switches, someone has finally produced a document that seems to show how to set up Dial (or in this case email) home on the Cisco switches.
I’ve got the “Cisco MDS900 Cookbook for SanOS v2.x” Which seems to spell out in blinding detail how to configure email-home.
The only shortcoming is that this is a Cisco document and EMC failed, again, to give me the information relevant to getting it to email EMC support.
What my research seems to be telling me is this.
Until we upgrade to v3.x SanOS, we’re out of luck, though limited email home can be gotten THROUGH EMC Control Center, but the EMC SAC is apparently not really set up to take emails from ECC, as there isn’t enough relevant information for them to act on.
So we’re back to “have ECC page you, then you call the SAC when there is a problem.”
I’m going to try and get my 9216′s upgraded to 3.0(2) before we get too much in the way of “production” on them. Maybe then I’ll be able to configure it properly, instead of the kludge they’re trying to foist off on me.
And just in case you need it, here are the email-home instructions for SanOS 3.x.

I am actually using the config t, hen snmpt-sever contact email@email.com
then the call home and the transport settings, but I am getting the same email for each alert that comes up very annoying = )..

I have it somewhere but I’m sitting in an airport at the moment. When I get to New Jersey and can RDP into my system at home I’ll send it, (or post it if it doesn’t have the “Confidential” tag.)
I’m glad it’s finally fixed, took em long enough.

Do you use or still have access to your emc account?

Mostly, though the access they give “partners” is *VERY* limited these days.

Ok, reason being I had sent you an email from mine a while ago but never got a response.

Hmmm – again – up until I finally got blackberry redirection to work, I don’t check my emc email too often. It’s easier to use my exchange email. Since I run blackberry enterprise server, everything is sync’d over the air and i have my calendar handy, which is something I really have grown to depend on.
